Mills River Elementary School
Henderson County Public Schools, Mills River, North Carolina
The new LEED Gold Mills River Elementary School provides learning space for 722 students, with core spaces sized to accommodate as many as 800 students through future classroom additions. There are 32 classrooms, a gymnasium, media center, art room, and cafeteria. The prototype design’s main corridor divides the school into two core groups. One group serves support spaces comprising school administration, media and technology, gymnasium, dining room, and kitchen facilities. The administration space locates all administrators and guidance counselors at the school’s main entrance, thus facilitating supervision of all visitors entering and exiting the premises. Since the media center, dining room, and gymnasium may be used after hours by the community. The academic portion of the building— the second core group—has three classroom wings and was designed to allow secured separation from the first. The three wings each contain classrooms for two grade levels (K-1, 2-3, and 4-5), as well as smaller resource classrooms and a teacher workroom with staff and student restrooms. A computer lab as well as art and music classrooms are also included.
