Combined Schools

Smithland Elementary School and Skyline Middle School

Harrisonburg City Schools, Harrisonburg, Virginia

As a result of limited sites and budget, Smithland Elementary School and Skyline Middle School were designed to function as two separate schools within one consolidated building.  The design centrally locates the building’s sole kitchen and multipurpose spaces.  Both spaces are flanked by dedicated dining areas and media centers for each school and separate administration areas are situated near the schools’ respective entrances.  Smithland Elementary School features a courtyard surrounded by classrooms, an art room, resource spaces, and a computer lab.  Skyline Middle School offers classrooms, labs, an art room, resource spaces, and guidance department.  Separate entrances, including dedicated gymnasiums, parking lots, bus loops, and drop-off lanes, promote dinstinct identities.
