Cary Street Recreation Center Addition/Renovation

Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia

With the Cary Street Recreation Center project, the university was able to achieve several goals of the 2004 Master Site Plan which included adding more than 120,000 square feet of dedicated square feet of social, fitness, and recreational activities to address the shortage of amenities that encourage students to make health and fitness a priority.  This historic building’s LEED Gold certification features new design and building strategies that also reinforce the importance of conservation and how it can be achieved in a historic structure.  Offering a wide-range of social, recreational, and fitness activities, the modern facility features weight and fitness rooms, climbing wall, a three-court recreational gym with an elevated jogging track, spinning room, two racquetball courts, a multi-use athletic court, natatorium, student recreation services administrative space, and space for an outdoor activities equipment checkout.  Additional goals of the project included preserving the structure’s historic elements, scaling the exterior to blend seamlessly into the Oregon Hill neighborhood, creating a campus gateway for the south entrance of the Monroe Park Campus, and connecting the center’s activities to the surrounding community.
