When a building in a prominent Main Street location in Downtown Farmville was destroyed by fire, the town recognized the resulting opportunity to construct a badly needed new Municipal Building and, in so doing, to create an anchor and focal point for planned streetscape improvements and other revitalization efforts in the central business district. The new building contains 30,000 square feet of space on three levels, and houses facilities for Town Council and other public meetings as well as space for the Town Manager and staff, Treasurer, and Police Department.
By taking advantage of site topography, public entries are provided on two separate levels in the front and rear of the building, responding to the need for access from Main Street as well as from the municipal parking lot across the street at the rear of the building. A landscaped pedestrian way serves as a pedestrian connector from the parking lot to Main Street, facilitating mid-block public access to and from Main Street businesses. An entry tower marks the Main Street entry of the building and signifies its civic purpose.
